Signs your system is due for an upgrade

  • You cannot recognise a face or read a number plate in footage you needed.
  • Night footage is a grey blur.
  • The recorder keeps only a few days before overwriting.
  • The recorder or app no longer receives updates, or the app has stopped working on your phone.
  • Cameras are failing one by one and replacements no longer match the recorder.
  • You want to add cameras but the recorder has no spare channels.

Upgrade paths, from small to large

Not every upgrade means starting again. Sometimes a new recorder and hard drive bring better storage and a working app while the existing cameras keep running. Sometimes the cabling is the valuable part: good coaxial cable can carry HD-over-coax cameras, which are a big step up from old analogue cameras without new cable runs.

Moving to IP cameras usually means new network cable to each camera, but it gives the most flexibility: higher resolution, better night images, smarter detection and simpler expansion later. A hybrid recorder can run old and new cameras together while you change over in stages.

Questions to ask before you choose

Ask the installer which parts of your existing system are worth keeping and why. Ask what the upgraded system will see at night at each key point, how many days it will store, and whether the new recorder can be updated and secured. If the installer recommends new cable, ask whether the old cable has failed or is simply not suited to the new cameras.

If the system was damaged by a storm or water, the upgrade is a good moment to add surge protection and weatherproof junction boxes. On coastal properties, ask about housings and fittings suited to salt air. Our guide to wireless versus wired CCTV helps if you are weighing up wireless options.

Upgrades in older homes

Many older Durban homes have systems that were installed in stages by different people, with cables run through roofs that have since been renovated. A site visit that traces existing cables is worth doing before anyone quotes. It shows what can be reused and avoids surprises halfway through the job.

Larger properties, long cable runs and summer lightning make upgrades common on the Highway. Read the local pages:

How the enquiry works

Tell us the suburb, the number of cameras you have now, the make of the recorder if you know it, and what is not working for you. We pass it to a vetted, independent installer who covers your area. The installer inspects the existing system and quotes you directly. If something has simply broken, start with CCTV repair; for a brand-new system see CCTV installation for homes.

What moves the quote

We do not publish prices. The installer quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:

  • How much of the existing cabling, cameras and recorder can be reused.
  • Whether new network cable must be run to each camera for an IP upgrade.
  • The number of cameras being replaced or added, and their resolution and night performance.
  • A new recorder and hard drive sized for your storage target.
  • Surge protection, weatherproofing and coastal-grade fittings added during the upgrade.
  • Whether the change-over is done in one visit or in stages with a hybrid recorder.

Our guide to what moves a CCTV quote in Durban explains how to compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my old cameras and just change the recorder?

Sometimes. A new recorder can improve storage and app access if it supports your existing cameras. The installer will check compatibility first.

Is HD-over-coax a real upgrade?

Compared with old analogue cameras, it is usually a clear step up in picture quality, and it can reuse good existing coaxial cable.

Do I have to replace everything to get phone viewing?

Not always. A newer recorder with a supported app may be enough. See our remote viewing setup page.

How do I know an upgrade is better value than a repair?

Ask the installer for both options in writing, with what each will achieve. Compare them on footage quality, storage and expected life, not only on cost.
