Diagnose first, replace second

A blank screen can have many causes: a failed camera, a damaged cable, a blown power supply, a full or failed hard drive, a PoE switch port that died in a storm, or a recorder that has lost its settings. Replacing the camera without testing the chain behind it is the most common way to waste money on a repair.

A good repair visit tests each link in the chain: power at the camera, the signal on the cable, the switch or recorder input, and the recorder's own health. The result should be a clear explanation of what failed, why it probably failed and what the options are.

Common faults we see enquiries for

  • Video loss on one or more cameras, or a black or flickering picture.
  • Night vision not working, or a white haze at night from infrared bouncing off a nearby surface or spider webs.
  • A recorder that keeps restarting, will not boot, or shows a hard drive error.
  • Recordings missing for some days, or the recorder overwriting footage too quickly.
  • Damage after a thunderstorm: dead cameras, a dead switch or a recorder that will not power up.
  • Water inside a dome or a corroded connector on a coastal property.
  • The phone app no longer connects after a new router, a new fibre line or a password change.

Storms, surges and Durban summers

Durban's rainy season brings frequent thunderstorms, and a lightning surge can travel along long camera cables into the recorder or switch. Systems without surge protection, or with poor earthing, tend to suffer repeat damage. After a storm repair, ask the installer whether surge protection should be added so that the same fault does not come back next summer.

When a repair becomes an upgrade

Sometimes a repair is not good value. If an old analogue system has several failing cameras, a recorder that cannot be updated and footage that is too blurry to identify anyone, an installer may suggest replacing parts of it. That should be an option you are given with reasons, not a decision made for you. Read more on CCTV system upgrades.

Older homes, coastal salt air and storm damage all show up differently around the city. Read the local repair page:

What to send with a repair enquiry

Tell us the suburb, the make of the recorder if you know it, how many cameras are affected, when the problem started and whether there was a storm or power cut around that time. A photo of the recorder label and of the error on screen helps the installer bring the right parts. We pass the enquiry to a vetted, independent installer who covers your area, and the installer quotes you directly. Our guide on why CCTV fails in Durban humidity covers the usual causes.

What moves the quote

We do not publish prices. The installer quotes you directly once they understand the job. These are the factors that usually make the difference:

  • How long the fault takes to find, and whether more than one part has failed.
  • Which part has failed: a camera, a power supply, a PoE switch, a hard drive or the recorder.
  • Whether a cable must be replaced, and how hard it is to reach.
  • Whether replacement parts are compatible with your existing recorder and cameras.
  • Adding surge protection or better earthing after storm damage.
  • The installer's call-out terms and travel to your suburb.

Our guide to what moves a CCTV quote in Durban explains how to compare quotes fairly.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair any brand of CCTV?

Many installers work across the common brands sold in South Africa. Tell us the make and model in your enquiry so the installer can confirm before visiting.

My cameras work but I cannot see them on my phone. Is that a repair?

Often it is a network or app setting, especially after a new router. That is usually quicker to fix than a hardware fault. See our remote viewing setup page.

Will I lose my old footage if the hard drive is replaced?

Footage on a failed drive may not be recoverable. If there is footage you need, say so before any part is swapped so the installer can try to save it first.

Do you do the repairs yourselves?

No. We connect you with a vetted, independent installer who covers your area. The installer diagnoses, quotes and does the repair.
