Systems that grew over the years

A common Gillitts picture: four analogue cameras installed years ago, a Wi-Fi camera added at the stables, a doorbell camera on a separate app, and a gate camera that has never worked well because it is so far from the house. Each part works on its own, but nobody can see everything in one place. An upgrade can bring the useful parts onto one recorder and one app, and replace what is holding the system back.

Reaching distant cameras

Long distances are the main technical challenge on Gillitts properties. Options include running new network cable, using fibre for very long runs, adding a switch part-way, or a point-to-point wireless link with a clear line of sight. Each has a cost and a reliability trade-off, and each still needs power at the far end. Ask the installer to explain why they chose one. Our wired versus wireless guide explains the basics, and the Gillitts area page covers the local setting.

Storms and outages on the high ground

An upgrade is a good moment to deal with the two things that most often take Gillitts systems down: lightning surges and long power outages. Ask for surge protection on the power supply, the recorder and long outdoor runs, proper earthing, and a UPS or inverter sized for the cameras, recorder and router. See our CCTV backup power guide.

Getting a clear upgrade plan

Send a list of what you have now, what works and what does not, and what you want the system to do. A rough sketch of the property helps. For more on the service, see CCTV system upgrades. If the gate itself also needs attention, see access control, intercoms and electric fencing.

Prices and quotes

We do not publish prices. The installer quotes you directly after seeing the property in Gillitts. The general factors are on the CCTV system upgrades page, and our guide to what moves a CCTV quote in Durban explains how to compare quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Can my Wi-Fi cameras join a new recorder?

Some can, depending on the brand and the standard they support. The installer will check compatibility.

Is fibre worth it for a far gate?

For very long runs or where lightning is a concern, fibre can be a good option because it does not carry electrical surges. Ask the installer.

Can everything be seen on one app?

That is usually the goal of an upgrade. Cameras on one recorder can be viewed in one app.
