Cover the ways in, not every metre of fence

On a large, wooded Kloof property it is rarely practical to watch every metre of the boundary with cameras. A better approach is to identify how someone would actually get in: the gate, the driveway, a path from the road or the bush, a low section of wall. Put good cameras on those points and on the doors of the house, and use lighting to help them at night.

Where a boundary backs onto open land or the reserve, some owners add outdoor beams or sensors linked to an alarm, with cameras to show what set them off. Mention it in your enquiry if you want both. Local conditions are explained on our Kloof area page.

Mounts that stay put

Kloof's monkeys and the strong summer storms both test how well a camera is fixed. Ask for solid wall or pole mounts, cable in conduit rather than loose, and no exposed connectors. A camera that is knocked a few degrees off its view is often not noticed until it is needed.

Distance and the recorder

Network cable for IP cameras has a practical length limit of about 100 metres per run without extra equipment. On big Kloof plots, the installer may need a switch or a link closer to distant cameras. That is normal, but it should be explained in the quote. Our guide on how many cameras you need helps you agree the layout first.

Storm-proofing and next steps

Ask for surge protection and correct earthing on any Kloof installation, and backup power for the whole system. For the full scope of a home system, see our page on CCTV installation for homes. For a system that already exists but has been damaged or outgrown, see CCTV system upgrades.

Prices and quotes

We do not publish prices. The installer quotes you directly after seeing the property in Kloof. The general factors are on the CCTV installation for homes page, and our guide to what moves a CCTV quote in Durban explains how to compare quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Can cameras alone protect a large Kloof property?

Cameras record and help you respond, but they do more when combined with lighting, a good perimeter and, on large plots, an alarm or beams.

Why might my quote include a network switch?

On large plots some cameras are too far from the recorder for one cable run. A switch or link part-way solves that.

Will the installer clear trees for the cameras?

Usually not. Plan to trim growth in front of cameras yourself or with your garden service.
