Surge protection belongs in the first quote

Hillcrest's summer thunderstorms are the single biggest threat to a new system. A surge can come in along the mains supply, along a long outdoor camera cable or through the router's connection, and damage several parts at once. Ask for surge protection on the power supply and the recorder, and on outdoor cable runs where the installer recommends it, plus proper earthing. If a quote does not mention it, ask why.

Estate homes and freehold plots

Inside a Hillcrest security estate, the estate usually handles the outer boundary, and owners focus cameras on the house, garage and garden. The HOA may set rules on where cameras go and how they look, so check first. On a freehold plot outside an estate, the gate, driveway and the edges of the garden come first, and large plots may need more cameras or longer cable runs to cover them.

What to expect on installation day

  • Mounting cameras at the agreed positions, at heights that show faces.
  • Running cable through the roof, in conduit and, where needed, underground.
  • Fitting the recorder in a cool, ventilated, secure spot with backup power.
  • Fitting surge protection and checking the earthing.
  • Setting recording, detection zones and phone viewing, and testing them with you.

Keeping recording through a power cut

Storms and outages often arrive together. A UPS or inverter sized for the cameras, the recorder and the router keeps the system recording when the power drops. Our guide to CCTV backup power explains what to ask. For the whole scope of a home system, see CCTV installation for homes. If you already have an older system, upgrading it in Hillcrest may be the better route.

Frequently asked questions

Is surge protection worth paying for in Hillcrest?

It is a common recommendation on the Highway because of summer lightning. It reduces the risk of damage from surges along cables, though it cannot prevent every strike.

Where should the recorder go?

Somewhere cool, dry, ventilated and out of sight, close to the router and a power point with backup. Not in the garage if it gets very hot.

Can I add an alarm or beams later?

Usually. Mention it at the quote stage so the installer can plan for it.
