Hikvision vs Dahua in South Africa: how to choose
Hikvision and Dahua are two of the CCTV brands most widely sold and installed in South Africa. This neutral guide explains how to compare them, and why the model and the installer usually matter more than the name on the box.
Why this question comes up
If you ask a few Durban installers for quotes, there is a good chance at least one will specify Hikvision and another Dahua. Both brands are widely available through South African security distributors, and both make everything from entry-level cameras to advanced commercial systems. Customers naturally ask which is better. The honest answer is that it depends on which models you are comparing and who is installing them.
We are not paid by either brand and we do not sell equipment. This guide does not rank them.
Compare models, not brands
Each brand sells many product lines at very different levels. An entry-level camera from one brand and a premium camera from the other are not a fair comparison. When you have two quotes, compare the specific models on paper:
- Resolution and sensor size, and how the picture looks at night in footage the installer can show you.
- Night mode: infrared, colour night vision with a built-in light, or both.
- Smart detection: whether the camera or recorder can tell people and vehicles from other movement.
- Lens: a wide fixed lens, a narrower one for distance, or a motorised zoom.
- Weather and impact rating for outdoor use.
- Whether the recorder supports the number of channels and the storage you need.
The installer matters more than the brand
A well-designed system with sensible camera positions, good cable work, backup power and properly set detection zones will outperform an expensive camera badly placed. Installers often specialise in one brand because they know its software and settings well. That familiarity is worth something. Ask the installer why they recommend the brand they quote, and ask to see footage from a similar installation, day and night.
Local support and warranty
In practice, the warranty you rely on is the one the installer gives you, backed by the South African distributor that supplied the equipment. Ask who handles a warranty claim, how long it takes, and whether the installer keeps spares. Equipment bought through official local channels is usually easier to support than grey imports. Ask the installer to confirm where the equipment comes from.
Apps and remote viewing
Each brand has its own phone app for viewing cameras. Ask the installer which app you will use, ask to see it on their phone, and check that it suits you: how easy it is to find a clip, export it and share it. Mixing brands in one system can work, but it can also limit features, so ask before adding a camera from a different brand later. See remote viewing setup.
Security settings matter for every brand
Any internet-connected camera system can be a security risk if it is set up carelessly. Whatever the brand, ask the installer to:
- Change every default password to a strong, unique one, and give you the admin login.
- Install current firmware and explain how updates will be handled.
- Avoid opening ports on your router unless there is no safer option.
- Create separate user accounts for family members or staff.
- Switch off features you do not use.
Business and organisational buyers
Some organisations, particularly those with foreign parent companies or government contracts, have their own policies on which security equipment brands may be used. If you are buying for a business, check your organisation's procurement policy before choosing. That is a policy question for your organisation; it is not one we can answer for you. See business CCTV installation.
Making the decision
If two quotes use different brands, compare the specific models, the warranty and support, the app, and the installer's design and track record. Choose the quote that shows you the clearest plan for your property. Frequently asked questions
Is Hikvision or Dahua better?
Neither is better across the board. Compare the specific models quoted, the warranty and support, and the installer's design.
Can I mix Hikvision and Dahua cameras on one recorder?
Sometimes, using open standards such as ONVIF, but some features may not work across brands. Ask the installer first.
Do I have to use the brand's app?
Usually, for full features. Ask to see the app before you choose.
